Little Shop of Horrors Production
Little Shop of Horrors is the 4th musical which St James’ has produced, and is a big step up in terms of theatrical techniques. This show requires more advanced props, staging, lighting and sound design than we’ve had in any of our previous productions, and that has created an immense challenge. We’re so proud of our wonderfully talented cast, who have had to mime using prop stoops and fake doors and wearing non-existent plant headpieces throughout the majority of the rehearsal process. The process began in September, where we had over 80 students audition for a measly 11 principal roles, and as the rehearsal process has progressed, that number has been whittled down to a final cast of 28 - still our biggest cast yet! However, there are far more than 28 students involved in the process. We would have been unable to produce this show without the exceptional input of the Art Club and the wider team in the Art and Design and Technology departments.
We also have invaluable support from students in a wide variety of year groups, taking responsibility for duties as varied as sound and lighting, to catering, to prop management, to make-up and hair. It is always a privilege to be part of a team, and it is so exciting to see so many members of the St James’ community pulling together to achieve this work. In previous years, we have been joined by professional musicians to fill out the band, and this year one of our Year 10 students, Joseph Elliot, has joined our band. It is fantastic to see him performing the drums within a professional context, and he has absolutely shone his own professionalism in working with these musicians. Well done JJ! This show has been an absolute pleasure to produce. It was a firm favourite of every member of the team, and the songs are enduringly catchy. We hope you enjoyed watching the performance as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.
